japan hokkaido, day 3 – hakodate asaihi (morning market), red brick warehouse, motomachi

Starting our day at the market.

There are loads of seafood sold here but we do not think the prices here are good. There are stalls that mark up the prices and when you pass by, they will offer you the original price and claim it as a discount.

We bought a slice of melon to share and I almost dropped it. 😅

Cool drain cap.

Found a place for lunch.

I had the scallop, uni and fish roe rice bowl! It was good but just somehow not as good as the one I had at Tsukiji Market.

—–

Hakodate Bay’s Red Brick warehouse.

It’s a really beautiful place for picture taking.

Most of the shops here sell home decorative items or gifts, like musical boxes, dream catchers, famous cartoon characters collectables…

Ice-creamed at Lucky Pierrot.

Headed to the Motomachi area, went pass a few pretty houses.

Visited an owl shrine, the view here is pretty.

Continued walking to a church.

It’s very very pretty inside the church but do keep very quiet and no photography is allowed.

Going back to the car.

Lunch at Kantaro Sushi.

Many choices to choose from.

Green tea powder.

—–

Back in hotel for a nap.

—–

Dinner at the restaurant opposite our hotel, The Very Very Beast. The rating looks good.

—–

Moved to Hakodate Beer Hall next.

—–

Ice cream again!

—–

Up we go to Mount Hakodate!

Be careful went going up or down the hill, there was a fox in the middle of the road while we were going down.

32 . new thai tanic

Tragic thing happened in the morning while I was still whatsapp-ing my Sister, I experienced a sudden sharp pain in my right eye. Couldn’t open my eyes but I somehow got to the kitchen, removed a fallen eyelash from the eye. It was still painful, like something was still stuck inside but there was nothing at all. Concluded that the eyelash could have caused a corneal abrasion.

Bought this eyedrop hoping that it would give me some sort of relief. Other than that I was a pirate most of the time.

Still got to go out to celebrate because it’s my day! Going stuff myself with loads of seafood at New Thai Tanic. I love seafood…

Just look at all that seafood. I’m aiming the Sri Lanka crabs, flowercrabs… Mmm Mm… After picking your crabs or prawns, place them in a box filled with crushed ice to put them in a sleep trance for 15 mins. Then the staff will help to prepare them for grilling.

There’s other selections other than seafood. Cooked food too.

It’s not exactly cheap to dine here? $70 per pax, so it will be good if you can chomp down two crabs, which I can manage easily.

Not a fan of the crab paste, so I ate it with pineapple fried rice. It’s like smoked mayo with rice.

Don’t forget the salad, the staff can prepare it for you too.

Each table gets a serving of banana pancake (actually prata), it was really really good. I should try making this myself.

Waffles and ice cream!

Hope my wishes comes true!

japan day 7 – osaka . todai-ji . shunie

Prepared noodles as breakfast, we shared a big cup which I think it’s just nice for both of us.

Bought Nissin’s new nugget and fries cup noodles. Looks interesting. The little pieces of meat really taste like nugget, whereas the fries… hmm… not so much. It’s like Jagabee potato sticks in soup. Nothing amazing about it, soup is just normal chicken soup.

The strawberries we bought the last time was sweeter. This has the sour note.

My favourite chocolate cake from Family Mart!

Out shopping and TC wants to get a Cremia to try, I had a little bit, it was soooooooo milky. I cannot.

So I got a chocolate waffle to wash down the milky taste.

Shopping got crazy when we were at Muji. Everything is so much cheaper than Singapore! some of them are even like 40% lesser because got sales. We bought things like cutlery, flooring mop, portable diffuser… Click here to see what other interesting Muji items that you can only get in Japan.

So we had to travel all the way back to our Airbnb to drop the stuffs, wouldn’t want to be carrying the bags around Nara.

Dropped by Coffee House Abuki for some food.

Fluffy egg & ham sandwiches, honey toasts and coffee. Simple fare but sooooo good.

Heading to Todai-ji Temple!

Pick acorns and see deers.

Enjoy the scenery.

Almost there!

Shunie is not at the main temple. We have to travel up to another site.

I guess these will be the bamboos that the monks will be using for Shunie later.

Always arrive early to get a good view! Shunie starts exactly at 7pm, so it will be good to reach at least an hour earlier.

Remember to prep some food and drinks too, just in case.

The crowd.

Oh. Let me give some background information first.

Shunie, a series of events held annually from March 1 to 14 at Todaiji Temple. This collection of Buddhist repentance rituals has been held every year for over 1250 years, making it one of the oldest reoccurring Buddhist events in Japan.

Omizutori is performed at Nigatsudo Hall, a sub-complex of Todaiji, which stands not far from the temple’s main hall on the slope of a hill. Nigatsudo literally means “second month hall”, referring to the second month of the lunar calendar, when Omizutori has traditionally been held. The second month of the lunar calendar roughly corresponds to March of the solar calendar.”

The fireworks is so awesome, ‘wow’ every single time.

It has been a good day.

_

Onigiri to fill us up a bit before dinner.

Although they are salmon cooked in different styles but very salty.

_

Beef don at Sukiya!

amk mala xiang guo . chateraise

DaYiMa craving for mala, so here I am at You Ma You La. The closest stall I could find with good reviews, they have quite a good variety of ingredients.

I wouldn’t say it’s the best but still addictive enough.
Usually for this amount of serving it would amount to $25 if I’m having it at Raffles City. This was $16.80.

There’s this auntie in MOS Burger with a tablet and a pouch on her head all the way while she’s seated and having her meal. Saw her using alcohol wipes to clean her mouth.

Keeps talking to herself.
– After I look at her, she says, ‘the girl the left bla bla bla…’ (yes I was sitting on her left, couldn’t catch the rest)
– then got an uncle sit beside my table look at her, “Got 老怪物 look at me… Second time. Third time.” Depends on how many times he turns to look at her
– “People are so judgmental.”
– “They keep looking at me.”
– “It’s okay, I’m leaving anyway.”
– A lot of “Shit, Jesus Christ” coming from her too.

Stands up and leaves with the tablet and pouch still on her head. 😑
Very entertaining auntie. Very entertaining.

One thing I cannot take it is when how vulgar people can get and still claim to be holy at the same time. I cannot. 🙅‍♀️

_

Got a cup of ice-cream from Chateraise! This is brown syrup with soy flour.

Omg. Yumz for $1.50. Next time I gotta try the Matcha.

_

Le husband made ginger red date tea for my DaYiMa.

kek keng eng kee seafood . creamier

It’s a creative food combi day. 🤣🤣🤣
I wanted duck porridge and asked for the salted veggies. Sick people don’t have the strength to chew too much.
TC order kway chap. Instead of kway, he replaced it with duck rice’s rice.

_

I’ve been trying to sleep off the flu… but it just want to be stuck at the back of the nose; tears & phlegm. 🤧

_

Dinner!!! 6 dish + 1 noodle. So hungryyyyy… Sick also must eat dinner. 😁

KEK Keng Eng Kee Seafood has one michelin star.

Moonlight hor fun. Nice but I would feel that most zi zhar stall has this standard leh.

Lotus root pork ribs soup. Hmm… not bad. That time the soup I had from the chicken rice stall was better.

Ming zhu bao. I ordered this because it looks really nice on picture when I was looking at Burpple. Tasted good but feels like something was missing. Like Jeff says, “Need sauce.” But he didn’t see the mayo that was at the side, so yup… he missed it. Even with the sauce… I think it’s not a good match… hmm…

Salted egg sotong. Fail. It’s just salty. We can’t really taste the salted egg and there’s this very mild bitter taste… the baking soda???

Now I need to go Hualong again to replace with their yummy salted egg sotong.

Three egg spinach. We were looking forward to the soupy kind but this was starchy. 😕

Tofu. $12 for a palm-sized tofu. You tell me worth it or not?

Marmite chicken. Overfried, so the meat is just dry amd tough. A lot of chewing to do. Fail.

I will never be back. We personally think that most zi char has better food than this place. Lucky we never order their crabs.

_

Guess where?

It’s Creamier! Another one ticked off my wishlist.

Having my tea while waiting for our waffles and ice cream.

The irony. No barista, so coffee is not available.

Quite a good selection of ice cream.

I had the Thai milk tea and hokey pokey ice cream with waffles, topped with 55% dark chocolate honeycomb.

My first question is: “Where’s the honeycomb?” There’s no honeycomb to be seen, so I was quite disappointed. It’s just honey… don’t tell me the granola is honeycomb please, I do know how to differentiate. I feel the flavour of the ice creams are not strong enough, although the texture is quite good. Thick and smooth. Maybe I sick la, so I’m not sure…

sushi express . kallang wave mall . chomp chomp

It’s easy to go carb-free when they have salad.

Tadaa! Fish salad.

Looks cute but it’s just balls of mashed up sweet potato.

_

Shopping around. I’m really thinking about getting Muji furniture.
Decisions. Decisions…

_

Black coffee. Mine is the cute one. 😁

_

How I see him from my eye level. 😚

_

Finally found blackhead peel mask in Daiso!!! Much smaller though.

_

Got free ice-cream if you shop more than $80 at Kallang Wave Mall! Don’t say I bojio. ✌

_

Cold storage has this premium iberico pork char siew. It’s really flavourful and juicy. 😋

_

Chomp Chomp
Satay. How come got baking soda taste… 😐

Mediocre.

Drop standard.

At least this was still alright.

Guess I will never be back here. The food choices are so damn limited now. All carrot cake, satay, chicken wings, sugarcane juice… for somebody feeling sick like me…. where’s the porridge stall??? 😭 It was so good… and now it’s gone.
